The yuletide season ushered in music, merriment, magic, food and festivities at Mahadevi Birla Shishu Vihar on Saturday, 20th December.
Every corner of the school premises was decked up in vibrant hues of red and white as stalls set up by students sought inspiration from Harry Potter’s life in Hogwarts, to celebrate its annual Christmas Carnival – Candy Cane Lane 3.0.
The annual carnival is organised to encourage students, staff and guardians to collaborate and contribute to the betterment of the needy. The fair began with the release of balloons by Special Guests – Ms. Gargi Guha Thakurta, Editor of TV9 and Professor Adwittiya Dutta Banik of IIHM, IEM, UEM along with the Principal Ms. Sonali Sarkar. The guests were thrilled and admired the creativity of the students. Junior students also joined in with their mesmerising dance performance.
This year, students led the fete with enthusiasm and mastery as they conceived fantastic names for their stalls like The Bagwarts Boutique, Hogwarts’ Snow Spell, The Wizard’s Alley and Wingardium Graviosa.They sold handmade items and ideated myriad games that kept the toddlers and teenagers glued. The Home Science Laboratory dished out delicacies like the Biscoffe Mousse, french fries and Cheesy Nachos that sold faster than any. The visitors also made DIY cupcakes to their sheer delight.
The presence of the local artisans added a flavour as they brought in hand-made items made of taalpata, pattachitra, pottery, iridescent kaleidoscope among many other. Students and teachers lined up to learn how these indigenous local crafts are made. The artisans were overwhelmed by the response of visitors. The school extended its whole-hearted support to these artisans to create a vital, reciprocal community.
Candy Cane Lane was originally conceived to reach out to the diverse people in need in the larger community. Social groups were invited to display their talents. Some groups even brought their neurodivergent inmates to participate in the fun fiesta.
No carnival is complete without the enchanting presence of celebrity performers. Visitors swayed to the mellifluous music of the duo- violinist Shubhodeep Chakraborty and flautist Ayan Mukherjee, foot-tapping guest performance by Diptarko Bose, a renowned music composer, captivating songs by the boy band from Calcutta Boys’ School and zumba by the alumni. The parent-toddler fashion show was the highlight of the day.
Every corner of the school was filled with the aroma of savouries and confectionery by numerous popular joints. The school pledges to sustain this effort and share the proceeds with the underprivileged by providing educational resources, essential supplies, ensuring a brighter festive season for those who need it the most.
