Campus Diaries

I’m Shuvomita Mazumdar, currently pursuing a Ph.D. in English at St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. As someone deeply immersed in reading and research, I often look back on my school experiences as the foundation of my literary pursuits. More than just a school, G.D. Birla Centre for Education has been the springboard for my personal and intellectual growth, teaching me skills that have stayed with me to this day.
The school was deeply committed to holistic development. It struck a beautiful balance between academics and creativity. Academics were important, but equal importance was given to cultural activities, sports and, life skills. Our teachers did not just focus on completing the syllabus, they nurtured our ability to think independently, articulate our thoughts clearly, and express ourselves confidently. One of the things I really appreciate is how thoughtfully the school approached early education. Until Class V, we were never pressured with exams or overloaded with homework. Learning felt natural, engaging and fun. This student-friendly method allowed us to explore our interests without fear.
One of the most exciting events we all looked forward to was Spectrum, the grand cultural event held every four years. What made the event truly special was that every single student had to participate. No one was left behind. For us, it was more than a cultural show. It was a lesson in teamwork that taught us responsibility, cooperation, and the joy of shared success. As someone who has always loved dancing and is now a trained classical dancer, I am grateful that the school provided me with several opportunities to perform on stage in front of esteemed guests. Performing on stage helped me build confidence, stage presence, and a deep connection with the art form, which I continue to pursue with passion even to this day.
Another highlight of our school experiences was our trips to Kalamandir, where we had the opportunity to witness captivating performances by international artists that exposed us to rich cultural heritage, leaving an indelible mark. Kalamandir also hosted inspiring sessions where people from various walks of life came and shared their experiences with us. Listening to them opened our minds and made us see the world beyond textbooks.
Looking back, I see my school not just as an academic institution, but as a palace that shaped my personality. The foundation of curiosity, confidence, and creativity I built here still influences every aspect of my life. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.
