It is one of the most terrifying moments where your entire worth as a human being, your dignity, and your future are brutally reduced to a two-digit percentage on a marksheet.\u00a0Let&#8217;s be honest, even if our parents are perfectly content with our marks, the moment the phone rings, you know deep in your heart that their satisfaction regarding your score is gone. A distant aunt from thousands of miles away calls to brag about how her son or daughter has topped the district with an insane score of 99.9%. It is not like I&#8217;m not happy for that person&#8217;s achievement, but the disappointed gaze which my parents exchanged with me is what made me realise the toxic reality of this academic system. In a single second, the entire atmosphere of the room shifts from celebration to silent disappointment. This is the toxic reality of our system. These percentages have become the sole yardstick through which all our qualities are assessed. It creates a fierce rivalry among peers as we are taught to look at our classmates as opponents, not friends! When your worth is tied entirely to a number on a sheet of paper, the joy behind learning is the very first thing to get crushed.  \nI have experienced this myself. History has always been my most favourite subject since primary school. I truly enjoy learning about the past, ancient empires, dictatorial regimes, and its impact on society, etc. However, because of this immense competition and burden of expectations placed on me, I had a panic attack right before my History exam. Although I regained a state of normalcy after a few breathing exercises, I realised something deeper. The panic attack did not happen because I did not know the material; it happened just because I was more fixated on meeting the expectations my parents and teachers had from me, instead of genuinely studying the subject out of keen interest.  \nI realised at that moment that the education system was broken, as the subject which never failed to spark a wave of curiosity &#038; interest in me had become a cause of serious anxiety. The intense emphasis on fulfilling expectations and getting a perfect score has turned schools into factories. While the classroom teaches us to solve difficult quadratic equations, algebraic identities, etc., it teaches us little to nothing regarding practical life skills. Infact, I was amazed when my school offered me 22 subjects to select from when I cleared ICSE 2025. \nLet me share my senior\u2019s experience at this school. She had decided on a subject combination consisting of Biology and History. When I first heard of it, I was taken aback as the subjects were from two completely clashing worlds, as if trying to mix immiscible liquids like oil &#038; water. Like, how could one possibly study the cellular structure of living organisms alongside the Naxalite Movement? In the traditional Indian way of thinking, one was either a science or arts student, never both. Yet, the more I considered it, the more reasonable it seemed. Shouldn&#8217;t a future dynamic genetic scientist have an understanding of the historical background of the world they intend to change? Life does not take place in separate areas of Science, Arts, or Commerce.
